In Sub-Saharan Africa, 77% of people are self-employed.

Not because everyone dreams of running a business, but because jobs are so scarce that people invent tiny hustles to survive.

Small businesses matter, but they cannot create mass prosperity.

Widespread prosperity comes from companies that grow big, hire thousands of people, and raise wages.

And that takes one thing above all: economic freedom.

It’s both sad and amusing to watch so many Africans celebrate European leaders looking “weak” in front of President Trump at the White House.

When I moved from Senegal to Germany, my grandma told me:

“Even if they don’t look like you or speak your language, they’re still human. And so are you. Anything they can do, you can do as well, if not better.”

Her wisdom gave me the strength to pursue my dreams.

If she had fed me victimhood instead, I might have never even tried.

Yes, colonialism happened to Africa.

But here’s what nobody wants to say: other colonized countries moved forward while we stayed stuck.

“Blame colonialism” is the get-out-of-responsibility card our leaders play while creating the very barriers keeping us poor.

Every time you blame colonialism for Africa’s poverty, a potential solution gets ignored.

Many Africans hate capitalism and endorse socialism because they conflate FREE MARKET CAPITALISM and CRONY CAPITALISM.

- Free market capitalism = everyone has equal access to opportunity. Anyone can easily build a business and provide value to the marketplace.

- Crony capitalism = you need to be friends with someone in the government to succeed.

Socialism does NOT work (if you don't trust me, just study history).

The only way to prosperity is through free markets.

No, Africa is not poor because of corruption. Corruption is just a symptom or something bigger…

I was proud to call myself a borderline communist… until I started building businesses in Africa.

I’ve sat through countless speeches about “African liberation” and “fighting imperialism.”

These speeches sound nice.

They get people excited.

But here’s what I’ve learned from building businesses in Senegal and traveling around Africa:

Speeches don’t create jobs. Businesses do.

Rhetoric doesn’t build factories. Anti-colonial slogans don’t improve our education systems.

Wake up Africa!

This is exactly how nations stay poor!

The world (and Africa in particular) would be a better place if more people understood this.

This is the sexy revolution Africa needs (not coups)!
