This is exactly why I don’t blame “colonialism” or “imperialism” for Africa’s poverty.

We can change things, and the first step is to not stay eternal victims of the past.

Every nation has had a hard past; what matters is how we fix the present and build the future.

Socialism is a good system.

A good system if you want to destroy a whole nation and make everyone poor and hungry.

This is why being a black woman today is better than any time in history.

If you look at the Doing Business Index, it’s easier to do business in any Scandinavian country than ANYWHERE in sub-Saharan Africa.

That’s why they’re rich and we’re poor.

We have mineral wealth and land wealth – we should be mind-blowingly rich if we were unchained like Denmark.

China: Embraced capitalism → Got rich → Got respected

India: Embraced capitalism → Got rich → Got respected

Africa: More regulations → Still poor → Still ignored

The formula is proven.

Why won’t we follow it?

This is how you make any country rich.

If you support the wealth creators (aka entrepreneurs), you will become prosperous.

And if you make it harder to them to create wealth, you will remain poor.

I’m about to tell you why Africa is poor.

And you’re not going to like it.

Not because it’s wrong.

Because it makes our poverty our responsibility.

Here it is:

You’re poor because you have no money.
No money because no income.
No income because no job.
No job because we don’t have many legal businesses.
And we don’t have enough of them because it’s hell to start one.

That’s it.

The business environment is why we’re poor.

Not colonialism. Not low IQ. Not aid dependency. Not resources.

The regulations. The licensing. The bureaucracy.

The things WE control.

Fix those, fix poverty.

We need to fight corruption in Africa!”

Sure. But nobody talks about what creates corruption in the first place.

People get stopped 10 times in 60 kilometers, and each stop will cost them $4 in bribes.

When starting a business takes 13 procedures, 84 days, and almost a year’s income, corruption becomes the rational choice.

Corruption is a symptom. Overregulation is the disease.

Celebrity aid culture taught wealthy people that Africans can’t be business partners. It also taught Africans they can’t build anything themselves.

Both beliefs are poison.

Singapore was colonized by Britain. Today, Singapore is richer than Britain.

Ethiopia was never colonized.

For decades, Ethiopia was Africa’s poster child of poverty.

Black people say this all the time:

“We spent 400 years enslaved, then another century fighting for basic rights.”

I get it.

But last time I checked, we have freedom now.

Freedom to build businesses, create wealth, and contribute to society.

So what do many of us do with it? Complain that “capitalism” is rigged.

You know what’s actually rigged?

Believing you can’t succeed.

That mentality keeps you poor more than any system ever could.

Learn to be free. Learn to build. Learn to win.

Poverty is solved by prosperity, and prosperity is built by entrepreneurs.

Any country that secures property rights, enforces the rule of law, and gives entrepreneurs the freedom to build will become prosperous.

It’s always about the environment.

Africa is the most overregulated region in the world, and our business environments make it nearly impossible to succeed.

Okay, so how did Singapore, Hong Kong, and South Korea escape it?

And how do you explain Ethiopia?

It was never colonized, yet for decades it was the global symbol of poverty (with starving children used in every aid campaign).

When newly independent African nations were seizing mines and farms in the name of “the people,” Botswana’s leaders looked at the same playbook and said: “No thanks.”

They partnered 50/50 with De Beers instead of kicking them out.

They let mining experts run operations while making sure diamond wealth benefited citizens.

They built roads and schools instead of revolutionary propaganda centers.

Most importantly?

They protected property rights while neighbors were busy confiscating businesses “for the revolution.”

The results speak volumes.

From one of Africa’s poorest countries to middle-income status in a generation.

Colonization did not stop Botswana.

And will not stop African nations that focus on building the future instead of complaining about a past they cannot change.

For Africa to move forward, we must uniformly repudiate the dreadful socialist legacy of our founding fathers.

We can honor their noble intentions toward independence, but their fatal economic flaws must be acknowledged.

Decades of “aid”... and poverty is still here.

You won’t change your life by complaining.

I am a “Criticize by Creating” type of gal.

That means i have ZERO patience for whiners and crybabies who conflate complaining about something with actually doing something about it.

Anyone can point out flaws and problems.

But true change-makers offer solutions.

My father told me never to come to him with a problem unless I also had a solution.

My parents believed that no matter what is available and where you are, you should “turn everything that surrounds you into things that work for you.”

In Sub-Saharan Africa, 77% of people are self-employed.

Not because everyone dreams of running a business, but because jobs are so scarce that people invent tiny hustles to survive.

Small businesses matter, but they cannot create mass prosperity.

Widespread prosperity comes from companies that grow big, hire thousands of people, and raise wages.

And that takes one thing above all: economic freedom.

But here’s what nobody wants to say: other colonized countries moved forward while we stayed stuck.

“Blame colonialism” is the get-out-of-responsibility card our leaders play while creating the very barriers keeping us poor.

Every time you blame colonialism for Africa’s poverty, a potential solution gets ignored.

Many Africans hate capitalism and endorse socialism because they conflate FREE MARKET CAPITALISM and CRONY CAPITALISM.

- Free market capitalism = everyone has equal access to opportunity. Anyone can easily build a business and provide value to the marketplace.

- Crony capitalism = you need to be friends with someone in the government to succeed.

Socialism does NOT work (if you don't trust me, just study history).

The only way to prosperity is through free markets.
